Has anybody really tried to get a mortgage recently? I have been denied by 8 lenders so far simply because I don't have a green card. Most lenders have tightened their underwriting guidelines. They will give mortgages only to U.S.Citizens or somebody who is a permanent resident aka having a green card. There are very very few lenders who will give mortgages to somebody on a visa and the rates may not be very favorable.
Regardless of your credit history/income/financial strength/savings there is almost no credit available in the market. Whether you want to buy a house or you want credit for a small business, there is no credit b'coz the lenders do not want to lend. That's the crisis. And if there is no credit, willing and able buyers, just like yourself will not be able to buy a house.
Administration wants $700 billion to buy bad mortgages (5% of the entire outstanding mortgages), which will inject confidence in the lending agencies, whereby easing the credit market, allowing everyone to get a loan and do whatever they have to do. But it doesn't end their, to recover from the economic slum, housing market must come back. And to bring the housing market, there needs to be more buyers in the market. As Alan Greenspan said few months back, speed-up GC, it will help bring buyers to the market, helping to bring back the housing.
After $700 Billion bail-out, the credit market will start to stabilize and it will be easier to get mortgage.

Friends,
Its upsetting to see USCIS playing with our lives. Inviting us to file AOS and then shutting the door on us when we did all the hard work to get here LEGALLY. I remember someone mentioning "GC is a scam". Did'nt USCIS attempt to do that with us? It all about ATTITUDE and at this point I hate USCIS/DOS's attitude towards us (Legal Immigrants) and our families. Starting June 13th, we all would shorten our life-span by 2-5 years due to this tension/excitement.
Well, most people would say US wont be affected even if we relocate in some other country. May be true! But my company keeps loosing work due to not finding the right candidate for the job. So they will of course!
In the long run, if this broken immigration system is not fixed, no business can afford to lose any resources when they know that there is demand in market. Microsoft has found other ways and this is the best example and more companies would soon follow. I hope that this mess gets cleaned soon!

I agree with your ultimate conclusion that we need legislative changes, but I am with complaining about fraudulent EB1 apps. Every fraud starts off small. Even this applying H1B without a job and then sit on the bench for a few months and find a job was started as a few thousand at one time. Now it is a fraud monster, we have learnt to live with.
I for one believe changing EB3 to EB2 is not even in the same ballpark as EB1 fraud, most people in EB3 are deserving or will become deserving EB2 while waiting. But EB1 fraud is straight up that, FRAUD, even labor sub takes a distant second to that.

I am very very skeptical about the claim that USCIS moved the dates to June 2006 in a random fashion. They could have moved it to Dec 2005, but they moved it to June 2006 because they have the ACTUAL GC numbers (unlike us:)) and they have an estimate of how many could be adjudicated.

ss benefits when we retire is such a long way away ..who knows what the situation will be that time ..US just needs a law change and ss benefits can be denied at that time ,,,so it makes more sense to discuss and act on recapture rather than waste time on something that will occur is 2025 or later ..just a thought

This problem has arisen out of a desire for the labor but not wishing to give the immigration benefits due to concerns which are not always convenient or comfortable to state.
If H1b was also a quota system, this would all be a moot discussion. Since it is not, and we have an unlimited L1 program we have this situation.
A few points are truly ridiculous. Anguilla with its 5K citizens has the same quota as India or China? How does that promote diversity. If every Anguillan applied in EB their quota would not get filled. Yet India has more diversity of religion, language, caste and virtually anything else you can imagine except perhaps ethnicity, arguably it has more diversity than Europe.
The worst insult in my view is EB immigration being quota based in a so called meritocracy. Either you are a meritocracy or you are not. If you want to promote diversity, then you can do so in FB or diversity category or something like that. If you really want to promote diversity then, you can argue this country already has enough people of northern European, German, Irish, Italian ancestry etc.
Which brings me to the main point, which is that it may be inconvenient, and it may be uncomfortable to say, but immigration(of all types) has, does and perhaps for the foreseeable future will have racial undertones.
A constitutional challenge will invariably run into the issue of aliens not having the same rights as citizens since no other argument can realistically hold any sway.

As Narendra Modi says, even if you are rich, own houses and cars and happy in life...but if you are not sure that at the end of day you will return home safely or not, then this money and richness is of no use.

I've also been approached by Amway people both in the Bay Area and beyond. I despise their tactics and their deception as much as (or more than!) anyone.
But let's not let it affect our community. Let's not let a few bad apples ruin that unmistakable bond we feel in America when we spot a fellow desi from afar. Now, any time I approach a desi to make a friend, I state in a jovial-yet-serious way, "don't worry, I'm not one of those Amway guys!" That's obviously not the first thing I say, but I make sure to throw that line in during the first minute or so of the conversation. If the fellow desi knows Amway, it gets a laugh, "oh, phew, that's a relief!" Once at an IKEA, I saw a desi who seemed to be following me. Turned out he wasn't following me at all. I asked him in a clearly joking tone, "Please tell me you're not with Amway!" He burst out laughing and we became friends (needless to say, he was not with Amway!).
So why don't we all agree on a similar approach? If we meet each other in public, let's simply state that we're not with Amway. And if you're accosted, simply ask that person if they're affiliated with Amway. Plain and simple.

Even if I had said that there is fraud and corruption in India, it would not be considered as a racist comment. Every year Transparency International generates a list of most corrupt nations. Ever wonder why India is on that list. Ever wonder why out of all places only in India US visa officers are instructed to do technical interview for IT visa applicants? You are living in complete denial and trying to play the race card whenever you get an opportunity.
Fraud and corruption is prevalent everywhere incuding India and a prepondernece of the bodyshops are nothing but a factory of producing overnight "IT Talents". Accept this is as one of the problem of this retrogression.
Don't make corruption in India as an incentive to thrash Indians. Majority of Indian H1b/L1 like any other community are well skilled professionals. It should not give you an incentive to thrash Indians or India. I am sure you belong to India and I am pretty depressed to see some one trash his own country to get some cheap publicity on this blog. They wanted to ensure that I am not LTTE/or refugee travelling to Australia. Well, I was not offended. I just thought if these idiots have been careful before then would have avoided assasination of Rajiv Gandhi.

She bought 3.28 acres in Kolluru Survey No-194/B and paid just Rs.22.20 lakhs but today valued at Rs. Six crore.
